CBT-E for Adolescents

Enhanced Cognitive-Behaviour Therapy (CBT-E) was first developed by Professor Christopher Fairburn and his team at Oxford University in the last 1990s, with the comprehensive treatment guide being published in 2008.  CBT-E is based on the transdiagnostic theory of eating disorders and is applicable to all eating disorders, including anorexia nervosa, in adults and adolescents.  It is the leading empirically supported treatment for eating disorders.

The application of CBT-E to adolescents was spearheaded by Professor Riccardo Dalle Grave and his team in Italy, in collaboration with Fairburn.  Over the past 15 years or so, CBT-E has been systematically adapted and tested with younger patients.  It is now considered to be a promising alternative to Family Based Treatment for adolescents with eating disorders.

This interactive full-day workshop will demonstrate how CBT-E can be used with adolescents presenting with the full range of eating disorders seen in clinical practice.  The workshop will include: an up-to-date look at the research base of CBT-E with adolescents; a comprehensive introduction to the stages of treatment that encompass CBT-E highlighting the key adaptations for adolescents; an exploration of how CBT-E, with a strong motivational focus, gives the adolescent a key role in decision making; and how to tailor CBT-E to the needs of individual adolescent patients.

The training will include didactic, interactive and experiential components and there will be ample time devoted to demonstrations of specific behavioural and cognitive interventions role plays and opportunities to practice skills.
